kiyotei from the Imperial Officer Corps bought the Musuem Replica boots. If you're not aware Musuem Replica uniforms have been 501st approved (but a few mods), so it is an option, but here's one review on their boots.
I ordered a pair from Museum Replica's and was very excited to get them. When I opened the rather small box, I found that the boots had been rolled up and bound with a rubber band. This created a horrible crinkle pattern in the leather of the shaft of the boots. I considered the boots unusable at that point. They looked terrible with all the cracks. I did inspect the quality of the boots and was very disappointed. The black leather outside is just a thin veneer of black leather glued over some other material (not sure what, leather, vinyl?). I returned the boots. I'll stick with my more expensive equestrian boot.
-End Review-
My take: If you know leather you can tell the quality of the leather by a picture. Good leather looks good. There are a few companies that use leather made/tanned in India. This leather is usually brittle and cheap. And just by glancing at the picture, I wouldn't spend $225 for these boots.
Thanks kiyotei for the review!
Looking at using an equestrian boot for costuming purposes? Need a little help and guidance at how to pick or handle the joys of the equestrian tall boots. Look no further. If I haven't covered something in one of my posts feel free to email me.

it's been awhile
It's been awhile.
My tunic arrived, but there were some issues. I wanted olive green and she made black. Not a big issue, but oh well. I guess my brain reasoned that the pictures were all dark, but after getting it I'm like it's definitely black.
There are a few other issues, one my fault: I gained weight. -_-
It needs another pocket for the code cylinder.
That's about it.
I also have come to the realization that my custom riding boots, actually suck for riding. They had been resized and still just were uncomfortable. I finally realized what the problem is and it's the edge of the back of the boot. It's too high. It's suppose to support (I'm guessing) the back of your foot and hit right about where your foot bends (it's hard for me to explain), but it's far too high for me. I'm not sure if Dehner will re-do them, but I guess I can always ask.
Since I lost some weight I think I'm going to start the search for boots to ride in and my custom boots will be for trooping. These boots cost more than my tunics. So I need to get my money worth.
I bit the bullet and ordered from a lady who is known to make 501st approved tunic. No chances the second go around.

My Uniform
Nancy from Akino Atelier is finished with my Imperial Officer uniform. She was about to send it off, but I noticed a small little thing. She sewed the seam where the code cylinders go shut. In the example pic I sent her it did look like a closed seam. But I think it looks pretty darn awesome.
Once I get my uniform I'll send it off to the 501st to try and get in. yay!
I ordered my code cylinders. My friend is going to see if she can make my rank bar. I decided on Captain. So I'm going to order the materials soon.
I'm going to use my custom Dehners for right now. They haven't been getting much action since I've taken a break from showing. Plus really can't afford another pair of boots at the moment. I need a new show helmet.
Dragon*Con
I believe I heard about Dragon*Con when I was in high school. My friends had introduced me to anime conventions. While I do enjoy a few anime shows I have always been more of a Star Wars nerd. There are so many anime conventions in Virginia and Maryland that it was always easier to attend anime conventions.
In college I didn't have the money to spend on going to Georgia. My first few years employed in my big girl job didn't lend to extra money with paying off loans and the car.
So finally after a decade of wanting to go, I finally did.
I had a blast. I meet some folks from the 501st. Did a crazy thing called light speed dating, drank, made new friends, met Timothy Zahn, Faith Hunter, and a few other authors, remet Sherilyn Kenyon, and sat in some awesome panels.
That's the really abbreviated version of the weekend.
I'm definitely going to make it a yearly thing. Saturday night I realized that I hadn't thought about my horse one bit. I'm always doing something horse related, it was a nice thing to just totally take a break from work (which has been insane) and the horses.
I think my favorite part of the weekend was just talking to people. I talk to so many different people. I had a conversation with people on the subway asking about the convention. I had conversations with folks at the convention about all different things. I think my job makes me so bitter sometimes it was nice to have decent conversation with another human being.

Aigle Boots
Aigle Boots have been becoming popular in recent years. I have no experience with them, so I can only type what I can see by their description.
They aren't real leather. They have two different types that could be suitable for trooping.
Start-$129.99
They say there are 6 different calf sizes. But looking at them I don't think they go very very big for a super wide calf. But take a gander at their sizing chart and find out your measurements.
The other model is the Ecuyer. It retails at $189.99 (though I often see them selling for $169-179).
Maybe they can work with you. Aigle Boots
Summer Sales
There are two prime times that equine stores usually try to clean out their inventory, late winter into early spring, and late summer into early fall. Like most retail stores they're clearing out the seasonal items to make way for the next season items. Plus in the springtime they're usually going to showcase the newest show gear for the next season.
Boots always tend to be on sale during these sales. So if you have a local tack shop you may want to get on their mailing list and see what sort of deals may pop up during the season.
My friend recently went to the Dover Tent Sale and scored a pair of Ariat tall boots for $75. Now the cheapest tall boot Ariat makes I think is in the mid-$200s, so this was a great steal.

Tools of the Trade
Tools of the Trade
Putting on boots can be an ordeal. You’d think that this finely crafted piece of leather would slide on as smooth as a glove. But sometimes putting on boots (as well as removing them) is like giving birth to a child. There’s a whole lot of pain, blood, sweat, tears, but when they are finally on (or off) a great sense of rejoice. If they fit. ;)
I got my first pair of boots when I was 12. I had taken lessons for about 3 years before the horse show bug bit me. I was content just riding at first, but those pretty ribbons get addicting after a while. So in order to succeed I needed the tools of the trade. I was much too old to stay in jodphurs and paddock boots so off I went to Double L Tack Shop in Stafford, VA.
Your first pair of tall boots is likening to your first car. I remember walking into the store and told the clerk I need to get my first pair of tall boots. She got excited and off we went to the boot section.
So the clerk pulls out these important –must have- tools:
*Socks
*Boot Pulls
Optional Tools
*Baby Powder. (Can help make it easier to slide boots on and off.)
*Boot spray.
When you first try to pull on your boots you should be wearing your breeches and your pair of stretchy socks. See Zocks post for more information. If you’re uniform is still being made wear something similar to breech material like maybe yoga pants or something stretchy (but not grippy)
Your boots should have these little tabs inside the boots (one towards the inside of your leg and outside). You take your boot pulls and hook them in these tabs. Then you pull them on like a rain boot.
When you first try on boots a properly fitting boot should have some resistance. To create that nice smooth look, there shouldn’t be any major gaps. The boot is supposed to feel snug, but if you feel if your leg circulation is being cut off, the boot is too tight!
Once you have the boot on. Put the other one. Just because one fits doesn’t mean the other one does. My left calf is ½” bigger than my right. Once you have them on there shouldn’t be any gappiness in the ankle area. My customs before I had them resized were too big in the ankle so when I rode/walked they were uncomfortable. Considering you’ll be walking a lot at a con make sure they fit.
What if it’s tight but I don’t feel like my leg is dying?
Keep the boot then. Leather does stretch some. So as long as it’s not ungodly comfortable. If you can find a boot stretcher some can stretch the boot out for you. I personally avoid this technique because if I’m spending $200+ on a boot I don’t want to spend any more money on it. Plus stretching too much can damage the boot over time.
What if it’s too tall?
As the area around your ankle gets broken in, the boot will drop 1 to 1 ½”. It’s actually good to get them a touch too tall than your normal measurement. It may mean you’ll be uncomfortable while you sit for a wee bit. I actually drove in my tall boots to tell break them in. So the back of my legs weren’t very happy until they started to drop.
How the hell do you get these things off?
Stay tuned for the next post. ;)

Custom Boot Option
First of all to all the dads, Happy Father's Day. ;) I got my dad Season 1 of SW Clone Wars for FD.
Now with all these companies I can only just forewarn you that anything could happen. If you have a good/bad/indifferent experience with a company, email me. There can be lemons/bad days, odd production screw ups, etc. So always take a review with a grain of salt.
I found this website when searching for custom boots. Go TallyHo.com I know nothing about this company.
A pair of custom boots for $395 does seem a little cheap. The only review I could find is someone recommended them in a horse forum. So if you're an awkward shape, maybe take a risk.
Brown boots have become a popular thing in the dressage community. I'm not fond of the color brown, but really like them in a boot. Really tempted to get a pair. They can make it in light brown or dark brown at this company. ;)

I was!
Star Wars, USA, and horses. Three of my favorite things. ;)
I was born 27 years ago in Seoul, South Korea on a military base. My first introduction to Star Wars made me cry. The scary aliens in the cantina scene scared me to bits. (I've always been a pansy, I still don't watch horror movies. But I love vampire and werewolf films, if done right.) It wasn't until closer to 11 years of age where I actually re-watched Star Wars and fell in love.
In 6th grade I could recite the entire first movie. By 7th I was trying to remember Empire Strikes Back. I've read all the books up to the Youghuasdlkfsv, whatever those crazy aliens started popping into the books. I wasn't a big fan, so I stopped reading. Though I do read Timothy Zahn's book every now and then. I probably should get new copies mines getting a little worn. I <3 me some Thrawn baby.
I've dressed up as Princess Leia twice. Once properly when I was in middle school, though my honeybuns came out running to the school bus. And second time where I was goth corseted version of Princess Leia. A vice president at school looked at me, smiled, and shook his head. We saw the midnight showing of Phantom Menace that night.
501st is my newest goal. I can't wait for my uniform and start the process of trying to get in. I don't ever call myself the biggest Star Wars nerd in the world. But gosh darn it, it does make me a happy camper.
I have a Stormtrooper fetish. When I was a kid I hated seeing them being shot down. Why are they the bad guys? I mean come on Imperials are sooo much cooler. Their uniforms are far superior to the rebels. :P
If only I could find a man who dresses up in a Stormtrooper uniform, is rich, has season tickets to the Capitals, won't mind the ponies, and deal with me. I mean is that so much to ask! :P
Anyways. I didn't get oodles of presents. But I have to say I had a great day. 2011 has been an up and down year with more ups.
If anybody reads this blog, thank you. I haven't been posting too much boot related stuff lately, but I will. So just hold tight.

Busy over here
So I've been slammed with a lot of things so haven't had any breathing moment to think about this blog.
Well I did think about it a little bit the past two days. I was at Upperville Colt & Horse Show the oldest horse show hosted in the US. It's in Upperville, Va a lovely country city. Where basically the closest motels are like 20 minutes away.
My horse did poorly. My trainer was like sucky birthday present. I'm like whatever. We figured out why she did poorly so I'm not all that upset. The quote, "I have a bad feeling about this", popped into my head multiple times before this show. I think we pushed her and she wasn't ready and she flat out told us.
While I was walking the 10miles a day around the horse show (I swear I lost 20lbs in the past two days), there was a custom boot dealer. I mentioned them before La Mundial. They have custom boots starting at $599. I really did want to talk to the guy, but I was in a bad mood, hot and sweating, and talking to a stranger about their boots required me to be pleasant. I'll probably see them plenty more times this year, so don't worry. ;)

May the 4th Be With You!
My father and I are watching Empire Strikes Back and it struck me that I should do a quick blog post.
So yup that's it.
If you don't have twitter there have been so awesome trends. replace one word in a star wars line with pants. That one was hilarous.
Washington Capitals are down 3 games, so a lot of the Caps bloggers were mixing Star Wars quotes with their mixture.
One of my favorite imperials is Admiral Piett. :P
If I ever got a black stallion I would want to do a dressage kur with the Imperial March.
Happy Star Wars day!

Put a Zock on it!
So if you have a new pair of boots you know how much of a pain it can be putting them on. Your new best friend will be a Zock. Zock is a company that makes a stretchy tall sock. There are other companies but I find Zock to be decent priced and very durable. Usually the crazy colored ones usually are $6.50-$12.50 depending on the design. Elvis ones I saw one time were $12.50.
Why is this your new best friend? Because these little guys can help make your life easier putting your boot on and off by a lot.
The material is usually kind of stretchy and it helps the boot to slide on/off.
Sorry for the photo quality. I was too lazy to find my digi camera cord so I used my cellphone.
I have 4 pairs: green dragon, Rosie the Riveter, Halloween bats, and a cool orange/pink swirlie one.
In a sport where tradition and conformity is a norm, our way of rebelling is having a cool pair of socks, that get's covered up by our tall boots. When I show I have to wear white breeches. That's why I get the crazy color ones. I have to stick out somehow. ;)
But they do come in normal colors if you're just feeling basic.
Stay tuned... Small Contest coming soon.
Boot Maintenance post coming soon as well.

Unzip the Zipper?
So I got a question about zipper boots. Someone asked if you can take the zipper out of the boot? Well I had no idea. In theory it can be done. So I went to Chronicle of the Horse forum. I got yes. But generally why?
One poster commented that they could take the zipper out but then when they stitch the zipper back you'd have a smaller calf size. So unless the cobbler (I assume a cobbler) can add a gullet or add leather to make it bigger it'd probably not be cost effective.

On the Hunt
Consignment shops are a great place to go shopping for boots. Especially since the trend for the boot industry is to go to the zipper many folks will dump their boots off at their local tack shop to be consigned. Some boots go ignored for months even years. These can be a gold mine for you.
Rich equestrians are notorious for buying an expensive item, using it for one show season and then getting rid of it. So you can potentially be buying a pair of boots that only been worn at horse shows 12x in one year.
Some may have been normal store bought boots while others can be custom made. So if you have a wide calf you can try and see if there was another wide calf individual who abandoned their boots at a lonely tack shop.
Who knows you may strike it rich.

Ariat Maestro Sale
The Washington Caps won in double overtime. So I'm a little wired. So I figure I channel my crazy energy and look for special deals on boots.
Ariat Maestros from Equestrian Collections.
one word: awesome.
These boots usually retail in the $400 range. They have them marked at $170. They don't have zippers so they're trying to get rid of the boots.
So if you have a skinny calf and are looking for a good quality boot check them out.
I've actually tried these boots on. I tried on size 10 in the ladies style with a zipper. They almost fit. While the lady told me that they will stretch and conform to my calf I wasn't a fan of buying a boot that almost fit me. Plus I'm a size 9. And I didn't really feel like wearing winter socks and still have my boot too big. But these are really nice boots. So grab them if you can fit in them.

Looking Good
Well asides my job sucking, life has generally been good. My laptop was on the verge of death, but dear old father fixed it. It really sucked a whole month without my laptop and our contract saying no more internet for us at the same time. :(
My laptop dying put my videos that I had planned behind. Plus I've been so busy with work and horses that home was only there for sleeping. Hopefully we'll get it shot on Sunday.
Getting my Imperial Officer costume commissioned. I haven't sewn in ages and I don't have the time or patience anymore.
I found a few people, but I emailed this lady. I always get vibes of situations/people and I have a good vibe about her. Let's see if I'm right in eight weeks. I got a quote from another lady, but Lady A is cheaper by $65 and she's making the code disks as well. So all I have to do is buy the belt and the rank bars.
So yay! Looking forward to finally getting into the 501st.

Rubber Boot Debate
Rubber boots are not acceptable for the 501st. I'm going to make a weak argument for rubber boots.
The age of synthetic materials has improved drastically in the past decade. When the members of 501st were looking at boots and such they probably did pick up a rubber boot and cringe at how awful it looked.
Rubber sucked back in the day.
Some rubber boots still suck to this very day.
But some of the more higher quality "pleather" boots look and feel like leather. In this picture I'm on my mare Lilly. I don't think I've ever featured a picture with her. She's a demon in horse form. When she wants to be delightful, she's pretty darn awesome.
I'm wearing...
Saxon Equi-leather Zip-Back Field Boots
Now what I can say there were often times where I forgot these boots were pleather. I had urges to clean them with my leather conditioner.
Now these boots sell for about $75. The problems with this particular boot are:
*field boots (they have laces not the type Imperial Officers should be wearing)
*zipper is on the back.
There are a few other brands. Major issue with rubber boots is the fit. They just don't conform to you like a nice pair of leather boots will. They're annoying. Most won't look as good as the Saxons and I don't believe the Saxon's make a dress boot version.
(They also squeak a lot when you ride horses. The zipper sucked too only lasted like 5 months, but it could be my calf was monstrous.)
I think I was suppose to be making an argument for rubber boots...
hmmm....
Leather is so much better. But I think these companies will eventually figure out how to get it right. Saxon is on the right path, maybe the other competitors will follow their path. But I don't know how big the market is and how much they want too, since leather will always be king in the equestrian universe when it comes to tall boots.

*zipper is on the back.

Spring is Here!
This time of year is exciting. Us equestrians await diligently by our mailboxes to recieve the newest catalogs filled with exciting new stuff. Last year wasn't very exciting, but this year Dover Saddlery and SmartPak was filled with cool new stuff.
I always have my highlighter ready to highlight some stuff I need and don't really need.
I haven't seen these in the catalogs yet (or I just probably missed them, I need new clothes and stuff for my horse), but side zip boots I've heard are allowable.
These are pretty sexxy. Calf sizes seem average. This is a ladies boot, but guys if your foot can fit you can probably deal with it. I think the rule is I wear a size 7 in mens, my ladies size is 9. If that gives you an idea.
They are averaging $269-300 in catalog. Shipping varies. SmartPak, equusunlimited.com, and equestriancollections.com seem to be carrying them.
I'm computerless at the moment, on my dad's comp. So hopefully I'll be back to posting a little more frequently when I can get a new laptop/desktop.

Cleaning Your Boots...
My dad is prompting this blog entry. I didn’t clean my boots and he said he was going to take my boots to the cleaner and have them professionally cleaned.
This sounds weird, but saddle soap can be very caustic to leather. If you ask a Boot maker, they actually tell you know to clean your boots unless you really need too. You ask the makers of saddle soap they tell you to clean the leather every single day. :3
Instead of re-writing/paraphrasing the article I’ll post it here:
www.dehner.com
One of the questions we get asked the most is how to properly clean a Dehner boot. The answer to this question can vary by leather type but there a few key points you always want to keep in mind.
Sometimes the simplest way really IS the best way. Plain tap water is ideal for everyday cleaning and is the easiest on the leather. DO NOT USE SADDLE SOAP! Now we know this may come as a shock to many but despite popular belief, the saddle soap can actually harm your boots.
The following exerpt is taken from an article titled "The Saddle Soap Myth" and it was written by Dr. Herndon Jenkins. It first appeared in the Carriage Journal, Summer 1983 Edition.
Saddle soap is a mixture of oil and soap. The soap's cleaning effectiveness is diminished by the need to dissolve its own oils, leaving little useful cleaning capacity to remove the dirty oils in the leather itself.
Soaps are inherently alkaline, but alkalinity is damaging to leather. The ability of soap to emulsify oils and release oil-entrapped dirt is inseparable from its alkalinity. Neutralize a soap solution and it becomes ineffective as a cleaning agent.
Most saddle soaps call for the user to work the lather into the leather but, since the dirt which has been loosened is suspended in the lather, it is pushed back into the leather and into the pores.
After so many years in the business, The Dehner Company has seen first-hand how continued use of such saddle soaps can actually decrease the life of a boot. A damp cloth with plain tap water should always be your first choice but if something more is needed or you have a really tough stain, try to find a pH-balanced cleaner and conditioner such as Lexol.
Lexol, and other cleaners like it, have a pH-balanced formula which helps you avoid the damaging effects of alkaline-based soaps. Use these cleaners for the tough dirt and grime, but as with any chemical, use it sparingly and ALWAYS follow your cleaning with a conditioning. Most brands such as Lexol will also make a conditioning product as well. Conditioning helps replace the "good oils" that keep your boot breathing and soft.
Although your boots need oil to stay healthy, avoid over conditioning them. Adding too much of a good thing can saturate the boot and cause it to become oily to the touch. Always follow the instructions on the conditioner label.
Washing the welt area of the boot can be a bit tougher and a soft bristled brush may be required. Gently work the brush around the welt area to loosen the dried-in dirt and oil then wipe dry with a soft cloth.

Q&As?
If you ever have questions feel free to email me: dressapp@gmail.com
So we were suppose to shoot the video last Saturday, but after a horrid week I just was totally drained. I sleep most my day away. This weekend was going to be a good weekend, but my mother needs help at the bar she works at. So I'll be channeling my inner bartender. :P
In other news I got the Dehner's back. They fit sooooooooooo much better. I'm so happy with them. They are super sexy and super comfortable; with the exception of they're still a touch to tall.
Horse showing is going to kill me this year. But I have my money set for my Imperial Officer costume ready. I’m trying to lose 8 more lbs and then I’ll get it commissioned. Excited.

Boot Sale
Dover Saddlery is selling its Ovation Ladies Dress Boots for 99.95.
Ovation Finalist Dress Boots
Dover doesn't have their size guide posted but I googled it:
Ovation Size Guide-Look for the Ladies Finalist Dress Boot.
Why are these cheap? They probably are good boots. I've never bought Ovations before, but the equestrian industry is trying to go away from non-zip boots. So they want to get these out of their stock.

Video update
Look for the videos after the first week of Feb. My fellow Star Wars nerd and high school buddy is going to shoot the videos for me. So at least the video will look good. I was a little worried. I'm not too keen with recording videos. :P
Gendering Boots
We have a new puppy and my mother went a little insane and was pounding his food into smaller pieces instead of just adding water to it. I let her know it's 3am in the morning and the pup can sleep another 3 hours. She had no idea it was so early. I'm also up because my lower back and vicadon apparently wakes me up after 5 hours of sleep.
Okay so I had to get that out of my system. The real post begins now...
Gentlemen this post is for you. My male BFF use to be ultra skinny in high school and college. Plus he had a short inseam so that made it tough for him to find men's jeans. So one day he tried on his sister's jeans. Well he found that those suckers fit him better. Jerk fit in a size 0 jean.
I tell you that story because riding boots really don't have a gender. The only difference btw the ladies and men's tall boots is usually the cut is a little more generous. I say usually because sometimes there is no real difference between the two in relation to calf size. I had looked at a few men's boots when I was searching for a tall boot because my calf is nice and wide. I think in some brands the calf was maybe 1/2" or 1" bigger not a real difference.
Usually the huge difference is the height of the boot.
So wisdom of the day: Don't let the tag ladies discourage you from getting a nice pair of boots. Ladies sizes generally come in more options. So if you do have a bigger calf and are tall you can probably find a boot.
Now if it comes without a freaking zipper is another issue.

mini update
So I'll be attempting to record two videos soon. I'm not too keen on the video editing process so hopefully they won't be awful.
First video will be boot fitting.
The second will be boot fitting part 2. When you recieve your boots ensuring proper fit. That may be delayed, hopefully until my Dehner's come back. Because the Dehner's are super sexy.
